The Lingo Lab
(English Language Support)
The South West College ‘Lingo Lab’ offers English language courses at a variety of levels to support all international students. College staff are highly experienced and well-qualified to assist and support students and fully understand the difficulties faced by students in their new learning environment and always strive to create a lively and friendly atmosphere. Students have access to the College’s multimedia facilities and Learning Resource Centres, enabling them to tailor their English language studies to suit the subject they will later study at foundation degree level.
South West College is proud to offer students a supportive learning environment. Face to face academic support is complemented by 24/7 access to our virtual learning environment with a range of interactive resources designed to aid second language study. In-sessional language support is also available to all international students and this can be arranged through the International Student Support team and any stage of the educational journey.
Course Options and Information
International Foundation Year/International Foundation Certificate
The International Foundation Year (IFY) aims to develop students English language skills from IELTS 4.5 (with 4.0 in writing) or equivalent to the level required for continued undergraduate study (the equivalent of IELTS 6.0) on your chosen foundation degree course. It also aims to develop the required academic skills and subject knowledge. The main aim of the Lingo Lab is to prepare students to succeed on their chosen course by breaking down the language barrier in friendly, progressive surroundings.
The International Foundation Certificate (IFC) is a similar course, but it's not attached to a specific degree programme, and is designed for students who are only able to study for one year at the College.
