BEng (Hons) Engineering (Top Up) (Validated by the Open University)

This BEng (Hons) Engineering Degree programme has been designed with industry objectives at its core. The aim of this programme is to produce graduates who can apply their understanding, knowledge, experience, skills and know-how to create social and economic value within the context of the Northern Ireland and UK economy. It aims to produce graduates who understand the underlying principles which underpin engineering, who can to conceive, design and implement a solution to a problem, creating something new which adds value to an organisation and society, within the boundaries of organisational strategy.

Engineering Manufacturing Skills Academy - Apprenticeship

The course supports the skills and knowledge development requirements for access into the engineering working environment and contains 3 components: -

  • Engineering qualifications (Combined)
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Engineering
  • (above cover: Welding , Fitting & Platework) Additional Units including:

    ETA Performing Engineering Operations - Assembling and testing fluid power systems (Level 2 Hydraulics)

    This unit covers the skills and knowledge needed to prove the competences required to cover a broad range of basic fluid power assembly activiites that will prepare the learner for entry into the engineering or manufacturing sectors.

    Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship

    The Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship will provide learners with a range of technical skills and knowledge enabling them to either gain employment or progress into further training within the Manufacturing or Maintenance Engineering sector. Although learners are likely to have already completed a Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Engineering, they can progress directly into the Level 3 qualification.The qualification includes mandatory and optional units, allowing learners to specialise in one of a number of engineering disciplines. Those available at South West College include Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering, Welding and Fabrication, and Maintenance, Installation and Commissioning.

    Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Diploma in Engineering

    This course is aimed at learners who are interested in all forms or engineering and have no formal qualifications. The BTEC Level 1/2 course provides a practical, work based introduction into the field of engineering.

    Pearson BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (90-credit)

    Pearson BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and understanding required for success in a range of mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering occupations. The qualification is also suitable for learners who have not yet decided on a particular engineering specialism and who wish to gain a broader understanding of engineering.

    Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering (GOLD)

    Advanced Automotive Engineering has been identified as a key area for economic growth in Northern ireland. A BTEC Diploma in Engineering is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and understanding required for success in a range of mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering occupations. This qualification includes a selection of Automotive Technology units for Learners of engineering who have a particular interest this area.

    Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (RQF)

    The BTEC Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and understanding required for success in a range of mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering occupations. The qualification is also suitable for learners who have not yet decided on a particular engineering specialism and who wish to gain a broader understanding of engineering.

    Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering (General Engineering)

    This course has been designed to meet the specific needs of the local engineering industry by providing a range of higher level technical skills in manufacturing, procurement and management. The course is aimed at those working in the engineering industry and seeking an academic progression route whilst continuing to work. It is also designed for persons who want to formalise the skills already acquired in the industry or those wishing to re-skill. In addition to this, the course is also aimed at full time students completing A Levels or BTEC National Diplomas who wish to continue their academic career in Engineering. This course provides a nationally recognised qualification offering career progression and professional development.

    About the qualifications

    Who is it suitable for?

    These programmes are designed to benefit school leavers wishing to pursue a career in the Engineering industry. They are also targeted at on site personnel considering upskilling/reskilling as well as current engineers and professionals pursuing Continuous Professional Development. On completion of the Foundation Degree you will have the opportunity to articulate to the second year of a Engineering Degree programme with exemption from the placement in Year Three. You can therefore complete an honours degree within the same 4 years as a student who enrols directly to the university at the beginning of Year One.
