This accessibility statement applies to content published by SWC’s Content Management System on the www.swc.ac.uk domain.

This website is run by South West College. Digital accessibility is a primary consideration in our web development practice as we want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.

For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts

  • zoom in up to 400 per cent without the text spilling off the screen

  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard

  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software

  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Some images within documents do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. Some images within documents use alt text which is the image file name. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).
  • Some Word documents contain a non-inline graphic or object. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.2 (meaningful sequence).
  • Some of our documents do not have descriptive titles that describe the topic or purpose of that document / page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.2 (Page Titled).
  • Some tables included in documents have not been structured appropriately, some PDFs are not tagged to be accessible by screen readers and some PDFS do not use the lang attribute to identify the language of the page. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships).
  • Live video streams do not have captions. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.4 (captions-live). We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
  • The Facebook messenger chat iframe element does not have an accessible name to support screen reader navigation. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value).
  • The Facebook messenger chatbox is not accessible using the keyboard. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 (Keyboard). .
  • Some content is covered by Facebook messenger chatbox/button at 400%. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.10 (Reflow).

We are actively working to address these issues as part of an ongoing programme to improve the accessibility of this website. We aim to resolve outstanding issues by 30th July 2024.

Disproportionate burden

We are not claiming disproportionate burden for this website.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live Video

Live video streams do not have captions. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.4 (captions-live). We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

Third Party Content

The SWC website contains some content that is externally embedded or integrated, including Facebook messenger chatbox. As noted above, this embedded content fails some WCAG accessibility criteria. This is third-party content that is neither funded nor developed by, nor under the control of, the public sector body. We will continue to investigate alternative options which are more accessible.

How we tested this website

A high standard of quality control was conducted to ensure usability, accessibility and functionality ​of the SWC website.

Both a mix of manual checking by expert developers and automated software (SortSite and Axe) to fully scan the website for accessibility issues.

In October 2022 the Government Digital Service conducted an audit of the site.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Following the audit conducted by the GDS in October 2022, we have urgently addressed the issues which fail to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard.

The site was retested on 17th April 2023 by the GDS.

We are continually reviewing the accessibility of our website. This will provide us with the insights required to assess and improve aspects of our websites that do not conform to level AA of the WCAG 2.1.

Documents which are not accessible (reasons listed above) will be reviewed and replaced with accessible versions where possible by 31st July 2024.

We have scheduled quarterly accessibility reviews of the website and accessibility statement.

This statement was prepared on 20th April 2023. It was last reviewed on 6th December 2023.

This website was tested on 17th April 2023 by the Government Digital Service.
