Fitness Guru Matthew Callaghan from Clogher took his Personal Training career to the next level by returning to South West College (SWC), completing a bespoke Active IQ Level 4 Certificate in Strength and Conditioning, paving the way for his career to soar.

Matthew mapped out his career from an early age and enrolled at South West College in pursuit of becoming a Personal Trainer. He completed his Level 2 Fitness Instructor and level 3 Personal Training qualifications and has worked in the thriving fitness industry for over ten years, turning his passion for fitness into a full-time career.

Matthew said: “Having a keen interest in health and fitness prompted my desire to become a Personal Trainer. Since obtaining my first Level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification at SWC over ten years ago, I have seen the industry thrive and grow, thus allowing me to go full-time as a personal trainer.

The Level 2 and 3 qualifications at the College provided Matthew with the desired knowledge and skillset he needed to achieve his dream of becoming a fully qualified personal trainer. However, Matthew wanted to take his passion for fitness one step further and build upon his professional competence. So, he returned to South West College to complete an industry-relevant Level 4 Certificate in Strength and Conditioning.

Matthew said: “The College delivered a brilliant course; our tutor left no stone unturned and was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and patient, which helped me feel at ease. The course has been excellent, bringing together classroom and practical based learning objectives, which are both interesting and bring tremendous value as a Personal Trainer.”

Matthew is thankful for all the opportunities the course has presented and encourages others seeking to advance their career to avail of the various flexible entry and progression courses available locally at the College.

Matthew said: “The Level 4 part-time course in Strength and Conditioning has boosted my career, opening up further job opportunities and enabling me to take my career to the next level, working within Sports Teams as a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach. The knowledge and skills I have taken away from it have been invaluable for me as a coach. Ultimately, my clients will now receive improved coaching services and new skills that I had not been confident in delivering beforehand.

“Overall, the qualification is another step up from the Level 3 Personal Training, and I recommend it to anyone that wants to become a better coach. In the future, I hope to further my education with a College Degree and Masters in Strength and Conditioning.”
