This course is accredited by the UK Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and students are eligible for student membership of the IES. Skills Focus funding available towards course fees for eligible employers to up skill staff or for self employed students. Please ask for further details.

The FdSc in Energy Environment and Sustainability is a practical course with a strong emphasis on renewable energy applications, environmental management and employability. It can be studied either full-time over two years or part-time over three years, or as part of the SWC Higher Level Apprenticeship in Renewable Technologies. The Foundation Degree is suitable for students who have a keen interest in the environment, sustainable development and in learning about clean technology. It is accredited by the UK Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and students are eligible for student membership of the IES.
The course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to understand and apply: Core Principles of social, economic and environmental sustainability; Good environmental business practice; Efficient resource, waste and energy management; the Principles underpinning sustainable and renewable energy technologies.
Sustainability and the Environment – learners will explore the wider impact of sustainability on the environment and world economy.
Renewable Energy Applications – an introduction to the study of energy production, with an emphasis on clean energy, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
Biomass and Biofuels Technology – an overview from site selection through to processing and end uses for Biomass and Biofuel products.
Business and Management
Engineering Principles – provides the basic knowledge underpinning mechanics and engineering.
Waste Management –includes agricultural, construction and municipal waste. Students will also gain practical knowledge of waste as a source of energy.
Environmental Science – students will explore the underpinning principles of Earth Systems to identify and understand the basics of environmental systems at various scales, from global to the local.
Wind Turbine Technology –provides the knowledge and skills to analyse sites for suitability for a wind turbine, calculate economic return, and gain knowledge of turbine types.
Environmental Business Planning – enables learners to extend their knowledge gained in other modules into managing a specialist field of their own choosing.
Energy Assessment – students will develop the necessary skills to assess energy demands and usage in domestic and commercial buildings.
Economics of Renewable Energy – explores the economic and environmental aspects of energy use, both renewable and non-renewable.
Business Improvement Techniques - this module will be delivered by a series of practical interactive lectures with an emphasis on team-work, innovation and problem solving skills.
Work Based learning – students will apply all of the technical, management and business knowledge gained in their course to work experience in a real life situation with a view to permanent employment.
The course is modular and assessments usually take place in January and May. Assessment is by a variety of means – coursework and assignments; project work and written examination.
Graduates of the Foundation Degree in Energy, Environment and Sustainability can progress directly to the pre-honours year on the Honours Degree programme in Environmental Management at Queen’s University Belfast, or can opt to continue their studies in Energy Environment and Sustainability to BSc Hons level at South West College.
Graduates can also progress onto a range of Higher Education programmes in applied and environmental sciences or enter the workplace directly at higher technician level or equivalent.
*All applications to this course must be made through UCAS.*A-Levels - normally CC, or CD with a relevant science. Relevant sciences are biology, chemistry, maths, physics, geography or computer science. BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject with majority of passes at Merit level. Relevant subjects include Business, Computing, Building Studies, Science or Engineering. Plus GCSE passes in English, maths and Double-Award science (or biology and chemistry) at Grade C or above. Irish Leaving Certificate - five subjects including a minimum BCCC at higher Level in relevant subjects. English and maths Ordinary Level Grade C would be necessary if not offered at Higher Level. Access Course containing significant science with overall average of 55% or an average of 60% in a non-relevant science course plus GCSE Double award Science. (Or biology or chemistry). Other qualifications as deemed acceptable by the admissions committee for the Foundation Degree. OR Mature candidates who cannot offer any of the above will be assessed for admission on the basis of their appropriate skills and knowledge.All candidates must be aged at least 18 years at the date of entry and will be interviewed prior to admission.
