Description

Learners will learn how to supervise the care to clients by other staff members. The learner will also ensure, is that each client is approached in a person centred way and learners will gain the knowledge and skills to operate in this way. It is imperative that carers work in a professional manner at all times, hence the need for confidentiality and the adherence to the NISCC code of conduct. Level 3 carers will also learn about the importance of recording accurately and reporting appropriately within the policies and procedures of the organisation

Additional Information

Placement in a Health and Social Care setting is an integral part of this qualification. As a part-time learner it is recommended that a minimum of 10 hours per week placement is undertaken in a relevant Health and Social Care field, if the learner is not employed in the care field. Learners are also encouraged to undertake essential skills in Literacy, Numeracy and ICT. Employability qualifications are on offer to students as well as on-line courses to support their learning.

Course Content

To achieve the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (NI) learners must achieve a minimum of 58 credits. To do this they must achieve: 37 credits from the mandatory units, at least 21credits from the optional units.

Core Modules

Example of mandatory units include: Communication, Health and Well being, Principles and Values, CPD in the context of health and social care.

Optional Modules

Examples of optional units include: Understand the process and experience of dementia, Physical disability, Infection Control, Physiological measurements, Pressure area care, Support in the administration of medicines, Understand and enable interaction and communication with individuals who have dementia, Provide support to manage pain and discomfort, Provide support to maintain and develop skills for every day life.

Assessment Method

Assessment is mainly through written assignments and observation of practice in the work environment by a qualified assessor. Learners use E-portfolio for the submission of work and contact with their assessor and Internal Verifier.

Progression Opportunities

Learners may progress into employment as a senior care worker in residential, nursing or domiciliary settings. Learners may also gain employment as a health care assistant in the hospital settings, undertaking specific roles such as phlebotomist.

Entry Requirements

It is highly recommended that learners have completed the City and Guilds Level 2 in Health and Social Care qualification or equivalent, plus have a minimum of one year experience in the care field. Learners are required to undertake an Access NI Check.
