News Story Training Programmes
Technology & Skills Centre Training at South West College is provided through a comprehensive vocational training programme which meets the needs of participants and employers. Training is divided into Apprentice NI and Training for Success.

Apprenticeship NI Provides the opportunity to participate in a Level 2 or Level 3 Apprenticeship. There is no upper age limit for participation in the programme, however all participants must be in employment from day one.

Training for Success is delivered through three components and is available to young people aged between 16 - 18 (up to 22 for a young person with a disability).

  • Skills for Your Life - an opportunity to address personal and development needs for young people.
Training for Success
  • Skills for Work - an opportunity for young people to gain skills and a Vocationally Related Qualification at level 1 to facilitate entry to employment, progression to Pre-Apprenticeship/Apprenticeship or further education.
  • Pre-Apprenticeship - an opportunity for those who have been assessed as being capable of achieving a Vocationally Related Qualification at Level 2, but who have not as yet secured employment to prepare for future progression to employment as an Apprentice.

Training is delivered ‘on-the-job’ with an employer and ‘off-the-job’ in College.
South West College offers a variety of Training Courses, through Apprentice NI and Training
for Success. On application for a course, you will be interviewed and your suitability for the course assessed. Advice and guidance on your chosen course and alternative courses will be available at this interview.

If you are following an Apprentice NI course at either NVQ Level 2 or 3, you must also undertake a Technical Qualification, which complements your chosen NVQ. Depending on the grades you have achieved at GCSE, you may also undertake Essential Skills qualifications in:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Information Technology

If you are following a Training for Success programme you will undertake a Technical qualification in your chosen trade. It addition you may also undertake qualifications in:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Information Technology
  • Personal Development
  • Preparation for Work

If you want to undertake an Apprentice NI programme at Level 2 or Level 3 you must have an employer from the start of the programme. If you cannot secure an employer, College staff will help you to apply for jobs. If you are undertaking a Training for Success programme it will be beneficial to undertake some work placement during the programme. In the event of you not being able to secure a work placement, College staff will help you source one.

Apprentice NI Level 2 or Level 3 will be paid a wage, which must be agreed with their employer. Training for Success participants will receive an Educational Maintenance Allowance of £40 per week plus travel expenses
