South West College takes on CSI

Who ever said ‘science is boring’. Certainly not the students at South West College, Enniskillen Campus! The BTEC Extended Diploma in Medical Science, with Forensic Options, students took part in a stimulated CSI style crime scene investigation last Thursday and Friday outside the Enniskillen Campus main building. A scene that turned quite a few heads in the local area!
The students had to examine and collect forensic evidence from a simulated crime scene as part of their end of year assessment. Students had to photograph the mock crime scene, take finger prints and collect blood, DNA, saliva, hair and fibre samples. The students are now actively working on analysing the results back in the lab and will present their findings in a Courtroom setting in the near future.
These students are in the second year of the course and most students will join proposed Foundation Degree in Biomedical Science at South West College Enniskillen or progress to a variety of Higher Education Courses in Science at University level. Science Coordinator Caroline Harker and student teacher Rebecca Gavin said; “Creative demonstrations like this bring it home to students what a real life career in forensic science could potentially be like. The students really enjoyed the experience and took the assessment very seriously. So watch this space, and be assured that the criminal on the loose at SWC will be behind bars very soon!!
