South West College is encouraging feedback on its draft Equality Scheme currently out for public consultation. This Equality Scheme has been drawn up in accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998. Section 75 of the NI Act requires public authorities to have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and regard to the desirability of promoting good relations across a range of categories outlined in the Act.
The College’s draft Equality Scheme sets out a framework for how the College intends to fulfil its Section 75 obligations. Tom Bradley, Equality Officer at South West College, explained; “The South West College is committed to promoting and mainstreaming equality and diversity and to ensuring staff and students are treated fairly and with respect. In order to produce a meaningful scheme we are consulting with people who use our services and facilities. The development of this Scheme is the latest initiative by the College to foster an environment of inclusiveness for all, so it is important that as many people as possible comment on the draft”.
The College is currently delivering a programme of communication and training with the aim of ensuring that all staff and board members are made fully aware of the Equality Scheme and understand the commitments and obligations within it.
The College would like to give everyone, including staff, students, the community and voluntary sectors the chance to have their say and would appreciate all comments. The Draft Scheme is available on the College internet www.swc.ac.uk/public-information/equality. Log on to find out more.
