Energy Enthusiasts Invited to Attend Hydropower Set-up Conference

The benefits of hydropower can be two-fold, providing people in Northern Ireland with a chance to benefit economically, as well as increase their green credentials. This message will be further explored at the upcoming Hydro Conference, hosted by South West College, Omagh Campus on Thursday 29th September 2011. Following on from a successful event held at the College last year; this year’s conference will provide practical advice aimed at helping organisations and individuals harness the power of water, through hydro technology to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions.

Organised by the InnoTech Centre, part of South West College, the conference will give participants an insight into the subject of hydro power, followed by a tour of a technical hydro site at a converted mill near Plumbridge, where they will observe a hydro system operated by Gerard Murphy of Hydro NI and learn about the practical processes involved in setting up their own hydro site

Neil Freeburn, researcher at the InnoTech Centre, said hydropower has historically been an important source of renewable energy in Northern Ireland, for example powering old water mills for the linen industry and it continues to present new opportunities for old sites and potential new sites with advances in hydro technology. Neil added,

“For many years energy has been drawn off water for industrial use – initially with water wheels powering mechanical devices and more recently modern turbines generating electricity.

“The hydro technology on the market is tried and tested. It offers new opportunities for progressive businesses and individuals. This event is about providing attendees with the knowledge on how to take their plans to reality.”

Places at this year’s Hydro Conference are limited and registration is essential. There is a registration fee of £10.00, which includes travel to the hydro site at Plumbridge, refreshments and lunch.
