CSI: South West College
Applied Science students from across South West College and students from local schools in the Dungannon and Cookstown area were offered the chance to learn more about the world of forensics this week.
Robert Wilkinson, Forensic Training Co-ordinator for the Police College, visited the South West College Dungannon Campus to introduce students to the scope of forensic science in the solving of crime and the identification of suspects.
Through interactive discussion and crime scene props, students also learned about the departmental make up of a forensic laboratory and how types of evidence, both forensic and fingerprint are identified, protected and recovered.
Speaking at the event, Robert Wilkinson commented on the students’ eagerness to interact with engaging questions and their willingness to partake in various role play scenarios, a lot of which stems from their interest in popular crime scene television programmes such as CSI and The body Farm. Robert added:
“It is great to develop a partnership with the South West College and I am extremely impressed with the turnout of students. I look forward to returning to the College to deliver more forensic workshops in the near future.”
South West College currently offers the Extended Diploma in Applied Science (with Bio/Forensic options). In the College’s drive to actively promote the STEM agenda, there are plans to offer an exciting new Subsidiary Diploma in Forensics (A Level equivalent) to local schools and also a new Foundation Degree in Forensics, commencing September 2012.
