Commissioner Visits Get on Board Programme
The Commissioner for Public Appointments in Northern Ireland, Felicity Huston, was guest speaker at the ‘Get on Board’ group meeting at South West College’s Cookstown Campus on Thursday 10th March. Get on Board is an innovative course which prepares people to serve on public bodies. The 12 week programme includes modules on decision making, managing public money and understanding the varying roles and responsibilities of an expected board member.
The Commissioner for Public Appointments said: “I personally address each course and have found the interaction with the participants both challenging and informative. I cannot stress enough the potential this programme will have in increasing diversity and enabling more people in Northern Ireland to go forward for public service."
Anne Beattie the Course Co-ordinator at South West College said; “We were delighted to have the Commissioner present to further emphasise the major role that public bodies play in the lives of everyone in Northern Ireland. The people who sit on the boards of these bodies have a major responsibility to the community, to ensure that these services are provided in the most efficient, cost-effective and accountable way. It is important that such board members are fit to carry out the role entrusted to them and that the best people are appointed to do so”.
