Course Area Overview

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

This course is suitable for you if you wish to learn the English language or improve your English skills.

South West College offers ESOL courses from Entry 1 up to Level 3. Courses are available in all campuses starting in September.

New students will be advised on the appropriate level for them to start. Previously successful ESOL students will have the opportunity to progress to the next level.

About the qualification

If you complete the course successfully, you will receive a City and Guilds certificate, valid in the UK for work and studies but not for citizenship or visa applications.

Those students wishing to obtain a qualification for a UK Visa, British Citizenship or Leave to Remain would benefit from the completion of an ESOL qualification before completing the required examination. Further advice and support will be provided by your tutor on request.

Level 2 is comparable to a grade C in GCSE English and may allow you to enrol onto a Further Education course. Some universities may also accept ESOL level 2 as an English entrance requirement for an undergraduate course.

Note: Non-accredited bespoke training is also available on request for employers, community groups etc. For more information contact the admissions department of your local campus.
