Spurred on by the famous Giro d’Italia cycle race, Chris McQueen (BATTERIE Project Officer), wished to follow the trail of the world famous cyclists on their tour of the North Coast using carbon neutral transportation modes.

The Northern Ireland route is filled with fantastic views, beautiful landscapes and world famous tourist attractions which were broadcast worldwide during the Giro d’Italia tour to millions of viewers.
“It was interesting to see our own country host such a prestigious event, I was actually jealous watching the cyclists pushing their way around the roads, then I thought to myself, it would be great to do it in our electric vehicle”.

With a keen interest in renewable energy and sustainable transport, Chris set about testing the vehicle, roads, and charging infrastructure. “Not only was it good to experience first hand NI’s current setup for EVs with the mind of tourists, but we also were able to collect telemetry data from our pilot Journey, and test the feasibility of Electric Vehicles for tourism within Northern Ireland.
As part of the BATTERIE project we will be using the data collected as part of the development of the online journey planning tool for multimodal transport for the Trans Atlantic Area."
