HATCH is is an EU INTERREG lVA funded initiative designed to support and develop entrepreneurship and employment in the Border Region. The project was developed by Cavan County Enterprise Board and will engage the expertise of Cavan Innovation & Technology Centre, as programme delivery lead in collaboration with the Business Institute of University of Ulster and South West College, in delivering targeted, accredited courses designed to meet the needs of Construction, Engineering & related Sectors, Migrant Workers and Female Entrepreneurs.
The HATCH project has been part-financed by the EU’s INTEREG IVA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and is the result of cross-border co-operation between the 10 local authorities within the central border region. It is led by Cavan County Enterprise Board, who have engaged the services of Cavan Innovation & Technology Centre as training programme delivery lead in collaboration with the University of Ulster and South West College.

Wind Turbine Technology

Location: South West College, Omagh
Rationale
Wind Energy is a significant energy resource in the Central Border Region. This course is designed to provide beneficiaries with the operational and legislative knowledge on installing Wind Turbines for domestic and commercial usage.
Course Content
Wind turbines are one of the most widely used forms of renewable energy. This module will provide the skills needed to analyse on-site suitability for a wind turbine, to calculate the economic return on the turbine, and the knowledge of the turbine types, and types of systems in which wind turbines can be used.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Analyse a particular site with respect to its suitability for a wind turbine
2. Select and justify a wind turbine for a given site
3. Explain the operation of a wind turbine
4. Calculate the economic case for the installation of a wind turbine
5. Explain the legal and statutory requirements for the installation of a wind turbine
The Wind Turbine Installation course has City & Guilds accreditation which was a requirement for recent Action Renewables / Sustainable Energy Ireland administered installation grants.
Wind turbine installers are required to meet the general electrical installation and commissioning regulations i.e. installation work must be carried out by suitably qualified (NVQ or FAS) practitioners.
BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES

Rationale
Many businesses are at a cross roads in terms of their development. This practical course provides a framework for business managers to review their current operations and prioritise in light of the new and emerging economic climate of to-day.
Course Content
This module develops the knowledge and skills required to make most efficient use of resources in designing a business operation. It teaches how to optimise quality, cost and delivery of a product or service through the structured application of a series of business improvement techniques. It is applicable to any business, whether product or service based.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
- Analyse a business process and prioritise areas for improvement
- Carry out a structured problem solving exercise to generate solutions to identified problems
- Implement changes to a business process
- Design systems to monitor modified process and ensure compliance
- Evaluate the effectiveness of this change in terms of key performance indicators.

DIPLOMA IN SMALL BUSINESS FINANCE

Rationale
Many small businesses depend on a skeletal staff to deliver all areas of the business function. All aspects of finance from Vat to costing are part of the owner/manager function as they cannot afford significant accounting outlay. This course has been developed to bridge the gap between the needs of accountants while keeping most of the accounting function in house and accessible to the owner manager or key support staff. It is unique in that it will address business finance from a cross border perspective.
Course Content
To gain a full award all eight modules must be completed successfully. A separate Assignment must be completed for each module.
