Governance information

The Governing Body of South West College is responsible for the effective and efficient management of the college, including its financial performance and the quality of its teaching, learning and assessment. It is comprised of committed volunteers from a range of backgrounds who bring extensive experience and knowledge to their role as Governor. A pen picture of each Governor is provided in this section.

Minutes of Governing Body meetings are also provided as well as the Instrument of Government, Articles of Government and Standing Orders which outline the constitution, functions and procedures of the Governing Body.

JOSEPH MARTIN

Joseph Martin has spent all his professional life in education, firstly as a Teacher and then as an Education Officer in the Western Education and Library Board. He was the Board’s Chief Executive from 1995 until 2004. He has chaired a number of education bodies in Northern Ireland including the Committee for the Early Professional Development of Teachers and Classroom 2000. He was Vice-Chairman of the Area Based Planning Central Group, established in 2008 by the Minister for Education in connection with the implementation of the Entitlement Framework.

Mr Martin has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2007 and Chairman since September 2010.

THOMAS BRADLEY

Tom Bradley has been the Equality Officer for South West College for seven years. A qualified teacher, Tom taught languages for over 30 years in various schools both North and South of the border before taking up his current position. Tom maintains a keen interest in youth work and education and sits on the Board of Governors of two schools.

Mr Bradley has been a staff member of the Governing Body since November 2011.

ASHLEY CLARKE

Ashley Clarke is currently undertaking a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science at South West College’s Enniskillen campus. After achieving her diploma, she plans to study teaching at university with a view to becoming a Primary School Teacher.

Miss Clarke has been a student member of the Governing Body since November 2011.

BRENDAN CORR

Brendan Corr is Audit Partner with Chartered Accountants Corr & Corr which was established in 2005. He has overseen the firm’s growth since then and it is now a leading Mid-Ulster based Accounting, Tax & Audit Practice, advising clients across a broad range of sectors in Northern Ireland, Mainland UK & Republic of Ireland.

Mr Corr has been a co-opted member of the Governing Body of South West College since January 2010.

AQUINAS DEVLIN

Aquinas Devlin.jpg

Aquinas Devlin is a full-time lecturer in Construction in South West College’s Omagh Campus. He began his career in the construction industry before moving into teaching where he now has 15 years’ experience gained in various Further Education Colleges and Government Training Centres. He is also a qualified Internal Verifier maintaining teaching and standards in the College’s Training Department.

Mr Devlin has been a staff member of the Governing Body since November 2011.

MARK KELLY

Mark Kelly is CEO of LamhRoe Ltd, a high tech QUB spin out company whose main activities include the development of High Frequency Communications products for the Space and Semi-conductor sectors. A graduate of Queens University Belfast, Dr Kelly has worked in Europe and the USA. He has a global knowledge of the Communications industry and his interests include increasing the image of the local area from the point of view of business, economics, culture and sport.

Dr Kelly has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2007.

MARGARET MARTIN

Margaret Martin has spent all of her professional life in education, most recently as Principal of St Catherine’s College from 1991 until her recent retirement. She has served on many educational bodies including the Post-Primary Review Working Party, the Education and Broadcasting Councils for NI and UK and the CCEA amongst others.

Mrs Martin is past Chairperson of Foras na Gaeilge and a past member of the Taskforce on Active Citizenship. She is currently the Network Co-ordinator for Sacred Heart Schools, Chair of the Sacred Heart Trust, a member of the National Executive of Trócaire, a member of the Radio Authority RTÉ and Vice Chair of the management committee of RAFT.

Mrs Martin has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2011.

WILSON MATTHEWS

Wilson Matthews has held Director of Finance positions in a number of public sector organisations most recently in the Northern Health & Social Services Board. He is a Commissioner to the Northern Ireland Legal Services Commission and Chair of its Audit and Risk Committee. He also serves as an audit member of the Northern Ireland Courts Service and sits on the Pharmacy National Appeals Panel. Mr Matthews is a member of the Washington Ireland Program which provides internships in the United States.

Mr Matthews has been a co-opted member of the Governing Body of South West College since June 2010.

WILBERT MAYNE

Wilbert Mayne 31082011.jpg

Wilbert Mayne has been involved in Rural Development for 18 years. He is a board member of the Ulster Farmers’ Union and is a member of both its Rural Development and Legislation Committees. He also represents the UFU on various external committees and is a past member of DARD’s Rural White Paper Stakeholder Advisory Group. He is Chairman of Cookstown Rural Community Transport and Shopmobility Cookstown and is a member of the SWARD LAG and the Board of Governors of two local Primary schools.

Mr Mayne is a past member of the SELB and was nominated by it to serve on the Governing Body of South West College. He has been a Governor of the College since October 2010.

MALACHY MCALEER

Malachy McAleer 31082011.jpg Malachy McAleer has been the Director and Chief Executive of South West College since August 2009. An Engineering graduate, he worked as a Civil Engineer in the private sector before joining the Education sector in 1982. He lectured in the Institute of Technology, Sligo prior to joining Omagh College in 1992 and the merged South West College in 2007.

MONICA MCGEARY

Monica McGeary.jpg

Monica McGeary is owner / manager of Source Business Leads, a lead generation, appointment setting and market research company currently employing five people. A Business Studies graduate, she worked for a US Corporation for four years as Director of Call Centre and International Business Development prior to starting her own business in 2001. Mrs McGeary is also a member of the Parent Support Group in her local primary school.

Mrs McGeary has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2011.

GERARD O’HANLON

Gerard O’Hanlon is a Director and Senior Consultant at Stredia, a risk management consultancy specialising in the reduction of workplace stress. He has led a large number of workplace stress reduction projects in both the public and private sectors.

He is a member of the Institute of Directors, the NI Chamber of Commerce and Omagh Chamber of Commerce, of which he is a Past President. Mr O’Hanlon is also a mentor with the Prince’s Trust where he has been recognised as a Prince’s Trust Champion.

Mr O’Hanlon has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2011.

THOMAS O’REILLY

Thomas O’ Reilly is a full time Councillor and has been a member of Fermanagh District Council since 2001 where he is currently Chairman, having also served as Chairman in 2008/2009. He served one term as an MLA for the Fermanagh & South Tyrone constituency and is currently Chairman of Destination Fermanagh and a member of the Fermanagh District Policing Partnership.

Councillor O’Reilly has over twenty years’ experience as a youth worker. He has served on the WELB and is a past Chairman of its Youth Committee.

Councillor O’Reilly was nominated by the WELB to serve on the Governing Body of South West College and has been a Governor since July 2008.

NICHOLAS O SHIEL

Nicholas O Shiel is Chief Executive of Omagh Enterprise Company and has worked with hundreds of people to create successful start-up and growth companies. He received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2008 for his contribution to enterprise and entrepreneurship and was an Enterprising Britain Awards Northern Ireland Finalist in 2009.

Dr O Shiel holds both a Doctorate and Masters in Management and is a member of the Institute of Directors, the Chartered Institute of Management, the Royal Society of Arts, former Vice-Chairman of Enterprise Northern Ireland and Past President of Omagh Chamber of Commerce.

Dr O Shiel has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2007.

MICHAEL SKUCE

Michael Skuce was a senior police officer in the PSNI up until his retirement in November 2010. Prior to his retirement, he was the District Commander for the South West region for four years where he successfully implemented a significant change program in delivering a new style of policing under the Patton Report. He has significant experience in leadership, change management and strategic and contingency planning. He is currently Chairman of a village community partnership and treasurer of a local church.

Mr Skuce has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2011.

DIANE STEVENSON

Diane Stevenson.jpg

Diane Stevenson is an Assistant Director in the Northern Ireland Environment Agency with responsibility for the conservation, designation and protection of National and European designated sites in Northern Ireland. Prior to this she was a Senior Agriculture Adviser in the West.

Mrs Stevenson is also involved with youth, taking the Bible Class in Enniskillen Presbyterian Church where she is an elder and serving as a Governor of the Collegiate Grammar School in Enniskillen.

Mrs Stevenson has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2007.

DEREK WEIR

Derek Weir 31082011.jpg

Derek Weir is employed by The Queen’s University of Belfast, managing its intellectual property and the drafting and reviewing of contracts between the University and its collaborative partners. He is an Engineering graduate who has worked in several local manufacturing companies, in disciplines as varied as electronic components, medical devices and quarry equipment, before moving to the public sector where he has worked in Invest Northern Ireland and both local universities.

Mr Weir has been a member of the Governing Body of South West College since August 2011.
