Construction Information Evening

Construction Information Evening
September, 2016

South West College held an information evening on construction courses and options available at all South West College campuses. Local businesses who work closely with the college attended the evening to talk to students about career opportunities and progression prospects within Northern Ireland construction companies.

Have you ever thought what construction is exactly? Construction comprises the creation, planning, design and financing of projects from the beginning to completion. There are many possibilities within the construction sector it generates countless jobs, requires good team work, as well as skill and knowledge of materials and techniques.

Courses at South West College vary from part-time, full-time and Higher Education courses. The construction department at South West College is designed to prepare students for all aspects of the world of construction, providing skills and knowledge currently in demand within the industry. The Foundation Degree in Sustainable Construction programme incorporates Passive House case studies on a number of modules. Passive House is a building standard that is truly energy efficient, comfortable, affordable and ecological at the same time. It’s not a brand name, but a construction concept.

Past student Nathaniel exclaimed “If you want the experience of university and a degree but exams aren’t your best achievement, then studying a BTEC covers everything you do in university. It gives you the knowledge to succeed in academic life, you also develop skills you need to get through life such as communication, respect, and punctuality.”

Technology Lecturer, Richard Dougan, informed ‘If you are interested in the fundamental changes occurring across the construction industry, and efficient multidisciplinary collaboration in the design and construction process with the support of advanced BIM technologies, the Foundation Degree in Sustainable Construction here at SWC is the course for you’.

Building information modelling (BIM) is set to become integral to the future of the construction industry, a study has claimed. Research conducted by Timetric’s Construction Intelligence Centre (CIC) found that a high percentage of industry professionals pinpointed BIM as the ‘future of the industry’.

Alan Ritchie, Director Architect from C60 Architects and Planners, explained “The Foundation Degree in Sustainable Construction provides students with excellent skills such as the use of Computer Aided Design and REVIT. Foundation Degree students whom we have provided placements to the past have been excellent”.

South West College courses enable students to leave equally prepared to progress to complete the next level of their studies or enter directly into employment. There are options for full time and part time to suit all requirements and specialised courses to learn or refresh workers already in the construction industry.
