A broad based interdisciplinary programme encompassing practical and field-based aspects of environmental science, project-based environmental engineering, business entrepreneurship, and the principles of sustainability and sustainable development. The programme is designed to produce graduates with a broad and practical knowledge of environmental science and management, resource, waste and energy management, renewable energy technologies and environmental business development and enterprise.

Course Content

This is a part time course, of five years duration. Modules include: Introduction to Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection; Introduction to Renewable Energy Applications; Principles of Environmental Science; Principles of Business & Economics; Engineering Principles and Applications; Study & Professional Skills; Renewable Energy Technologies 2; Policies for Environmental Sustainability; Sustainable Waste and Water Management; Environmental Management; Work Placement; The Economics of the Environment; Transition to a Low Carbon Economy; Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Environmental Engineering; Research Project.

Assessment Method

The modules are studied in two 12 week blocks - Block 1 in semester 1 from September to December, and Block 2 in semester 2 from January to May. Learners study two modules in each semester. Each module is assessed separately, by a combination of coursework and examination.

Progression Opportunities

Graduates can progress to postgraduate studies in e.g. Environmental Management, Renewable and Sustainable Technology or Sustainable Development. In the public and private sectors there is an increasing interest in environmental and sustainability issues and a growing need in the workplace for graduates with appropriate qualifications and experience. An emphasis on employability provides the skills for employment in energy and environmental management, consultancy and sustainability sectors.

A level: BBB + GCSE Mathematics at Grade C. BTEC Extended Diploma: 10 Distinctions and 8 Merits + GCSE Maths Grade C. Irish Leaving Certificate (Higher): + Ordinary Grade C Maths. Access: average 65%. Refer to general entry requirements.
