The business world of today demands that you learn by doing. Learners will study all areas of business such as starting and running their own business and demonstrating entrepreneurial skills through a variety of projects. They will gain experience in Marketing, Finance, Law, Human Resource and Retailing. Industry visits and expert lecturers support the development of strong employability and academic skills.

Course Content

The business course encompasses a broad range of subjects over the two years which will include the business environment, human resources, accounting, law, marketing, retailing and eBusiness. Learners will have the opportunity to take part in business events, entrepreneurship activities, build strong business knowledge and skills with particular emphasis on developing the personal skills to work in business or to progress to Higher Education with confidence. They will experience the international dimension of business by having the opportunity to learn a language and participating in European project work.

Assessment Method

Assessment will focus mainly on project based coursework, practical reports, reflective reviews and oral/written submissions. External examinations may also form a component of the assessment process.

Progression Opportunities

Progress is to Year 2, the Extended Diploma in Business and then onto University or a relevant Higher Education course at South West College, for example, the College Foundation Degrees in Business Services Management or in Financial Services. Common career pathways for past learners include Accounts, Financial Services, Marketing, Human Resources, Administration or Business Management. Past learners have demonstrated their entrepreneurial spirit and started their own business.

Entry Requirements

The minimum requirement for entry is four GCSEs, grade C or above. Entry requirements may be enhanced subject to demand. Learners who do not possess GCSE English, Maths and IT upon entry will be required to undertake Essential Skills qualifications. Entry is subject to a successful interview.
