Pearson BTEC Level 2 First Diploma in Health and Social Care

This course will provide learners with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to prepare them for employment in the health and social care sector or to provide career development opportunities to progress onto a relevant Level 3 programme. Learners will be fully supported by highly qualified and experienced staff who are committed to creating engaging and exciting learning environments for all. As work placement is an integral part of this programme, they will get the opportunity for both learning and doing.

Course Content

The course comprises classroom based learning and work placement. Classroom based learning will help learners to understand the relevant health and social care theory which they can then put into practice within the setting. Learners will complete 60 hours of work placement and this will also help them to develop other core skills such as communication and listening, importance of confidentiality and care values. The Level 2 First Diploma qualification has core, mandatory and optional specialist units. This is to ensure that all learners have a broad and balanced coverage of the vocational sector. Core units: Human Lifespan Development; Health and Social Care Values; Carrying out a Research Project in Health and Social Care. Other units available on request.

Assessment Method

There are two forms of assessment: Assignment work which can consist of presentations, posters and leaflets, and group activities and written exam, externally set for two units i.e. Human Lifespan Development and Healthy Living. Pass, Merit and Distinction grades are given for each unit.

Progression Opportunities

The knowledge, understanding and skills gained in studying a BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care will aid progression to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care available at Dungannon, Enniskillen and Omagh Campuses. The course also prepares learners to enter the workplace in the health and social care sector, e.g. Health Care Assistant and in due course onto Nursing or Dental Nursing programmes.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of two GCSEs at grade A*-C. Learners should have a strong desire to care for others in a health or social care setting. Any voluntary work undertaken will be looked on favourably. Learners must be vetted in accordance with the requirements of the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups N.I. Order (2006)(Access NI). Entry to the course is subject to a successful interview.
