Description

The aim of this course is to build upon the interest learners already have in the field of Art and Design and prepare them either to progress to Higher Education in the field, or to enter the industry directly. The practical nature of the course is designed to develop learner's expertise of the area of Fine Art and Large and Small Scale Design. Through hands on projects, they will develop skills, knowledge and understanding. A range of carefully selected topics equip learners with a broad view of all the main subjects needed to fully understand this area, and to be able to design and implement projects to a high standard.

Exploring Specialist Ceramic Techniques; Materials; Techniques and Processes in Art and Design; Graphic Image Making; Exploring Textiles; Visual Language; Product Design; Contextual Influences in Art and Design; Ideas and Concepts in Art and Design.

Assessment Method

As a practically focused, vocational course, assessment will be carried out by the use of projects and coursework assignments throughout the duration of the course. These will offer opportunities to achieve Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria, and will be tracked through the year to form one final grade for each unit, and an end of year grade for overall course, giving UCAS points in the same way as A Level grades. Last year 29% of SWC learners achieved DDD grade or better in this course.

Progression Opportunities

On completion of Level 3 learners may progress to a range of Higher Education courses such as Foundation Degrees or Honours Degrees. It is also possible to progress directly into employment as an Artist, Graphic Designer, or in some cases to self employment, using the skills learned.
