If you’re hoping to pursue a career in the sport or health industries, physical education or are interested in how the body works, then sports science and its related disciplines could prove to be the perfect programme for you! This course is designed to provide a broad understanding of the area of sport, health, exercise and fitness. Students will also be given the opportunity through our “Sports Academy” to gain qualifications in a range of sport related and sports coaching disciplines aimed at increasing employability.

Course Content

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is currently delivered over a two year period. This is the same time frame as a standard A-level programme and on full completion is worth the same as 3 A-levels. In Yr. 1 students will complete a BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. This year is the equivalent of 1 ½ A-levels. In Yr. 2 students will complete a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. This year is the equivalent of 1 ½ A-levels. Mandatory Units • Sport and Exercise Physiology • Anatomy for Sport and Exercise • Sport Biomechanics • Research Methods • Research Project • Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology • Sport Injuries and Massage • Analysis of Sports Performance • Sports Nutrition • Fitness Testing and Fitness Training

Assessment Method

A variety of assessment methods will be used throughout the course, including written documents, practical assessments, presentations, logbooks, use of video evidence, open book tests, leaflets/brochures, etc. All assignments are set and marked by tutors.

Progression Opportunities

Successful completion of the course can lead to relevant Higher Education courses, for example, the Higher National Diploma in Sport at South West College. The qualification can also be combined with other subjects to form part of a UCAS/ University application. Subjects that can be studied at university include; • Podiatry • Physiotherapy ** • Occupational Therapy/Sports Therapy • Health Physiology/Sports Nutrition** • Healthcare Science ** • Nursing** • Physical Education/Sports Coaching **(provided the GCSE Science requirements are met)

Entry Requirements

Standard requirements – minimum 4 GCSE’s (Grade A* - C or equivalent), or successful completion of a Level 2 BTEC (FIRST) Diploma. Preference will be given to those students with GCSE Science and or Physical Education. Places on the course are limited, so it may be necessary to enhance the entry requirements in the event of over subscription. An interview may be required.
